Why consider Physical Therapy after an illness or injury?

Physical therapy is most effective when utilized immediately after injury, surgery or during recovery of disease through out the three phases of healing. The initial acute phase of healing starts immediately after a surgery or injury and is an ideal time to start PT for addressing pain relief, decreasing inflammation and maintaining range of motion. PT should continue during the sub-acute phase of healing, which starts about 48 hours after a surgery or injury and ends approximately three months post injury, for the best outcomes of returning to full function. A positive prognosis is much more likely when treatment is initiated early versus waiting until the later third stage called ‘chronicity’. Physical therapy, offers long-term resolution of movement based dysfunction, is often complimented by other alternative practices such as acupuncture, chiropractic and massage.
